Frequently Asked Questions

First SCA camping. event? Want to know what to expect? Well, we've got answers for you!
How do I figure out where to camp?
-Are you with a large group? If you are, message Matilda!
-Are you by yourself or have a small group? Once you get to site, you will be directed to singles camping areas- pick one and set up.

Can I bring my normal tent and camping gear?
-Of course! We're happy to have you, we're not worried about your tent. There's plenty of room for everyone.

Can I bring my modern camper/rv?
-Yes, but you may be asked to set up in an area not within the tent spaces. Message Matilda, and we'll discuss where you'll be, and other details. As this is a farm, rather than a campsite, we do not have standard hook up sites and there will be no grey water dumping or other services. We also do not have power hookups.
Can I have a camp fire?
-Not this year. The region is experiencing a severe drought and has been declared an 'extreme risk area'.
Can I have a camp stove?
-Yes! Please make sure it is on a table of some type, to keep it off the ground. Double check to make sure it's turned off when you're done.
What should I bring, other than my tent?
-A comfy camp chair, sunshade, drinking water (we will have washing water for you), food and drink, your camera, a cool mug, and an attempt at pre-17th century clothing. It may get chilly at night, and it will be very dark, so bring a warm blanket and lantern.
I heard there were going to be horses?
-Sadly, not this year. There will be horses, goats and other animals on site, but we won't be able to ride the horses (or the goats, they hate that) this year. Keep in mind, there will be poop. Just watch where you step, you'll be fine.
What do you mean by 'working farm'?
-The site is a small farm and horse boarding facility. We use the fields for the event, but there will be livestock in the area. All the animals are friendly and usually well behaved, but you won't be able to go into the barn or animal areas without an escort.

Can I or my kids meet some of the animals?
-Of course! We'll schedule some time for you to visit with the goats, feed the ducks or get chased by the rooster. Check in at gate and we'll give you more details.

Can I bring my dog?
-Sure! Well behaved canines are always welcome; we ask that you keep them on leash or in a secure area like a crate or pen at all times. Naughty pups will be sent home. Camping with a dog can be challenging, feel free to message Matilda for tips and support. Don't forget to scoop your poop!
Are there bugs?
-Yes, there will be bugs. This time of year you should expect mosquitoes, and there may be some flies and bees. A quick spray of bug repellant usually works well for us.

Are there animals other than the totally cute goats and grumpy ducks?
-Yes, the area will have wildlife, including skunks, porcupines, squirrels, deer, black bears, and barbarians. Although you can bribe barbarians with beer, the rest of the critters will pester you if you leave food out. Make sure you pack up your food in a cooler or tote, or you'll be getting a visit from a furry 'friend'.

I have some accessibility needs, who do I speak to?
-We will have access to charging for sleep-apnea machines, or mobility devices. Let staff at gate know you'll need to use the service, and they'll direct you to the charging point. Accessible toilets will be placed around the site. Contact Matilda for assistance.

I'm concerned about what to expect when it comes to the landscape? Is it difficult to walk around if I have some mobility issues?
-Although Havelock is the gateway to the Canadian Shield, the site itself is fairly easy to navigate. There will be walking paths, all the big rocks will be flagged and the camping areas are largely level. The fields are sown with grass and a bit of low scrub, which will be mown immediately prior to the event. The access to the list field and archery ranges is well packed gravel, and we do have some designated accessible camping areas if needed.
I heard that there were big rocks that I should be worried about when driving around the site?
-There are rocks on site, and some of them can be 'axle-breakers'. It's the Canadian Shield, not much we can do about glacial till! The site owners have been spending a lot of time and energy removing or burying all the rocks they can, and we will be flagging every rock we feel might be a concern. We do ask that you stay to the marked areas in the parking lot and that you drive slowly (5 km/h) around site. If your vehicle's clearance is lower than standard, and you're worried about it, please let gate know. We have volunteers ready to walk with you to your parking spot or camping area, to make sure the route is safe for your vehicle.

Can I wander the woods?
-Yes, please do! There's some cool stuff in there for you to explore. Just make sure you avoid the archery range- it will be on the map. The site backs onto the Havelock-Tay rail line, which makes for a beautiful stroll if the weather is good.
If you have questions about anything, feel free to reach out to staff and we'll happily answer you! SCA camping events are a whole lot of fun, and a great opportunity to see the Dream come to life.
